BIO FERTILIZERS

Biofertilizer is a substance containing living microorganisms which, when applied to seeds, plant surface, or soil, colonizes the rhizosphere or the interior of the plant and promotes growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the host plant.  These are also called as “ Mircobial Inoculants” and play a major role in organic farming.

TYPES OF BIO FERTILIZERS

NITROGEN FIXING BIO FERTILIZERS

1. Azotobacter
2. Azospirillum
3. Rhizobium                                           

AZOTOBACTER: It is free living nitrogen fixing bacteria which also secrets plant growth promoting substances like IAA, GA which enhances plant growth. It is recommended for Cereals, Vegetables, Fruit crops, Ornamental crops, plantation and commercial crops. It helps in savings 20-25% of nitrogenous fertilizers and increasing the yield to an extent on 23-30%.

AZOSPRILLIUM: It can be used for Cereals, Grasses, Millets, Vegetables and ornamental plants. It helps in saving 20-25% of Nitrogenous fertilizers and increases the yield to an extent on 18-20%. It is most suited for paddy and sugarcane.

AZOLLA: Its is able to fix atmospheric nitrogen in association with blue green alage Anabaena in paddy crop. It also adds large amounts of green manure to soil. It is also used as manure is vegetable cultivation and ornamental crops and in compost preparation. Azolla is also rich in many nutrients and is nowadays being used as a partial substitution to animal feed, poultry feed, piggery and fish rearing.

RHIZOBIUM:  It is a symbiotic nitrogen fixing microorganism used for legumes, Pulses and oil seeds, its application has enhanced the crop yield to an extent of 18-20% thereby reducing the use of chemical fertilizers by 20-25%.

PHOSPHOROUS MOBILIZING BACTERIA (Bacillus megaterium)

PHOSPHOROUS MOBILIZING BACTERIA (PSB): Are beneficial bacteria capable of solubilising inorganic phosphorous from insoluble compounds and also minimize phosphorous loss from soils. Bacillus megaterium are aerobic bacteria Bacillus megaterium cause important clinical diseases such as septis, soft tissue infection, PSB is used as soil inoculums to improve the plant growth and yield. When PSB is used with rock phosphate, it can save about 50% of the crop requirement of phosphatic fertilizer. The use of PSB as inoculants increase phosphorous uptake by plants.

POTASSIUM MOBILIZING BACTERIA (Frateuria aurantia)

POTASSIUM MOBILIZING BACTERIA: Potassium being the third essential and vital macronutrient required by plants and the uptake mechanism by potassium solubilising microorganisms. During the solubilisation of potassium, the microorganism causes the solubilisation of Calcium, and Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese etc. By its usage an improvement in yield to an extent of 25-30% with an saving of 20-25% fertilizer. This can be used in all monocots and dicots.

BIOCONTROL AGENTS

 Pseudomonas fluorescens exert biocontral against fungal phytopathogens like fusarium, phytopthara, Rhizoctonia, scelerotia, as well as some phytophagus nematodes. These act as plant growth promotes, wilt controllers and phosphate solubilizers. This can be used in crops like Cardamom, Banana, vegetables, ornamental plants etc.

Trichoderma viridae exert biocontrol against fungal phytopathogens like fusacium, phytopthara, Rhizoctonia, Scelsotia. These acts as, wilt controllers and phosphate solubilizers. Trichoderma also helps in organize matter decomposition. These can be used in crops like cardamom, banana, vegetables, and ornamental plants.

MICROBIAL CONSORTIA :

It is a single preparation containing Nitrogen Fixers, Phosphorous Solubilizer, Potassium mobilize, PGPR and a biocontrol agent. It is suitable for all types of crops. It can be used efficiently terrace gardens, kitchen gardens in urban areas.

COMPOST CONSORITA :

It is a preparation containing a mixture bacteria and fungi which can decompose complex organic substances present in biodegradable wastes. It enhances the rate of decomposition in composting process. It is an effective solution to the problem of slow composting on farms. It is suitable for all types of biodegradable wastes, agricultural wastes, urban wastes.
